No DVD Playback

Postby tstraveller on Sun Sep 27, 2009 12:38 am

Hello, I love this O/S though I've had to work through a few quirks like everyone does. I'm new to this... Anyway I installed Mint 7.0 on my brothers Dell laptop and had no problem with DVD playback. I loaded it onto my Toshiba Satellite and if I put in a DVD, movie play starts then crashes. I tried it with the other players including VLC and same result. Here is the terminal log after trying in VLC:

Looks like insufficient resources? I'm running a P4 with 2G RAM, seemed like more power than my brother's old Dell. Anyway, any suggestions?

It does have an integrated Nvidia video board and I had to use the propietary driverm iif that makes a difference.
Thanks

Open a terminal in the Toshiba and type "dmesg | grep -i error".
Post any error messages you get to this thread.

What I was wanting to check with that command was whether or not you had DVD drive hardware errors show up in the kernel log - which you did not. Although there does appear to be a fault with your ethernet card/chip!

So that rules out having a hardware fault with your DVD drive. I don't have any solution for you at the moment yet....

Thanks for your help, if anything occurs to you please let me know, I would really like to view DVD's on this thing. I'm new to Linux and it's still pretty much Greek to me.

If it helps, audio CD's work fine in Linux. The DVD player worked in XP, which I installed over because this thing was so sluggish it wasn't any use to me! I think you've already established it's not a problem with the player.

That search got me here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1132119

which got me here:
In VLC: Tools->Preferences->Video->Output to X11 Video Output.

So.... VLC working with the change ...GREAT!!!!! I have DVD playback!!!!!
Also, did same for GNOME MPlayer and it works!

Tried to do the same for Mplayer (Totem) but can't find where to change the video output, is it a terminal command? So Mplayer stil crashes. If you have any ideas, let me know

And THANKS to you guys to help me get it runnin. Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll watch a movie! :D

I would propose to report this problem to Ubuntu Multimedia Production Forum
http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=335

There are experts who know everything about such problems.
Try to be polite and exact.
