Hi.

I can only hope this is the right forum!

I have a samsung mp3/4 player thing. Its seen when I do lsusb as follows:
anthony@anthony-desktop ~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 009: ID 04e8:5115 Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd
Bus 001 Device 008: ID 05e3:0702 Genesys Logic, Inc. USB 2.0 IDE Adapter
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 03f0:7011 Hewlett-Packard
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 1307:0165 Transcend Information, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 1241:1166 Belkin MI-2150 Trust Mouse
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 13fd:2040 Initio Corporation
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 2001:f103 D-Link Corp. [hex]
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 06a3:8021 Saitek PLC Eclipse II Keyboard
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

The beasite in question is at the top of the list so at least its 'seen'

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might get this thing mounted so that I can send to and remove files from it?

This is not urgent, so please take care of more urgent cases first, but if you have any ideas, Id love to hear them!

Have you tried just double clicking the "Computer" icon on your desktop and seeing if the device is there, then double clicking the device? If you do not see it there in the file manager, then remove the device from the USB port, open a terminal, type "tail -f /var/log/messages", insert the device into a USB port, and then paste the new messages you see in the terminal to this thread.

Hi langanon.

Yes tried the computer route. No g.

I typed in what you said, then connected device and the new message was:
Oct 14 01:46:11 anthony-desktop kernel: [ 801.725136] usb 1-4.6: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

Thats it! I am utterly clueless as to what that means! (is it Klingon for something? :) )

Did you turn the player on after you connected it?

Hi there.

Yes, well the player you cant 'turn on' in that way. It autodetects that its usb connected. So Mint sees the player and the player knows its usb connected. However after a few mins the player says 'disconnect usb'

did thing again and got: Oct 14 14:12:07 anthony-desktop kernel: [ 384.864067] usb 1-4.6: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

OK then. The kernel obviously is not detecting or mounting that device. I did a quick Google search and discovered there have been problems with the Samsung mp3 players and Linux. What model exactly is that? - because there are some fixes but we need to kow the exact model #.

Read this website - about halfway down. Does your Q1 have and MSC setting - if so, it should work.

Ah well.

Now Im a linux fan, i shall have to buy compatible hardware. Although, It sort of grates to have purchase choice determined by the O/s I use. I have full confidence that soon, this will all be a thing of the past.

Thanks for your help and your effort in locating that webpage for me.

I shall designate this pile of electronic sheep sh*t to the bin soon enough :)

Thanks

I would not give up so soon. First of all try burning the newest firmware release onto the player. That may solve your problem - especially getting the MSC ability: http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/type ... mp3players

You will have to use a Windows machine to burn the new firmware onto the device.
