[solved] Not possible to activate sound on HDMI

Hi,

I use Linux Mint 8 for some month, and recently I have connected a HDMI video cable from my video board (NVidia GT220) to my TV. But, it is impossible to have sound directly on the HDMI cable.
My HDMI output is "sound capable" (it works on Windows with NVidia driver)
But, on LM8, the sound still on the analog output and I did not found where to "pipe" the output to the HDMI.

I searched for a solution on different forum, but did not found a solution.
It was talking about SPDIF, but I did not found it on AlsaMixer.

Here is some informations about my configuration :

Install gnome-alsamixer. Launch it, unmute IEC958 and raise the slider bar up.

If I remember, I had already check this with Gnome-AlsaMixer.
But I will double check this evening.

Hello,
Well, I check again and still have no sound on HDMI output.

But, in fact, there is something that seems strange.
On alsamixer, there is 2 outputs named IEC958 and IEC958 D, but there is no bargraph for this 2 channels.
(See my print screen)
Could it help to understand what is wrong?

Hi,

Ok, just dig up an old Topic....

Some month ago, I search a solution to activate sound on HDMI, without success.
And I let the matter drop... and continue to use my external speaker.

This week, I wanted to get back on this problem. Really tired to see my old external speaker each side of my TV...

And I finally found the solution...
It was "only" a problem of ALSA version.... I found this guide (http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HO ... ,_or_GT240) talking about this, and it works for me, and my HDMI sound...
So, by updating ALSA from V1.0.20 to V1.0.23 as explain on this guide, all is OK. And I can definitively remove my ugly external speakers. The life is (sometimes) beautiful, no?

Now, I can close again the subject....
