Post by Kittum »

Hello I am running LMDE.

I can see the video but I can not get audio from a WMV media file using these codecs.
Windows Media Video 9 WMV3

Media players tried is Gnome MPlayer and VLC. Same results in both.

I take it this is a physical file, not a video stream?

Yes this is a physical file.

Yes - if "win32 binary codecs" is the package you referred to, It seems that package came bundled with the install.

I should have noted this sooner that this set of physical files did "play" on a computer that was running Mint 6. Having said that, the playback quality was not "real" good but still useful. The video and audio was seldom exactly in sync and both would "skip" once in a while but that worked plenty good enough for me. I would be just as happy if I could regain that ability.

I don't know it this is in anyway useful but here is more info about the entire situation. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=60612

A few days after this was posted, the computer involved in this matter developed other issues with other USB devices. One of the issues was that MP3 devices would no longer connect. Another Issue was that the file transfer speed between the external USB drive and the internal hard drives dropped from 3 and 4 meg per second to about 1 meg per second. It was discovered that the motherboard - which was about 6 years old - was in fact starting to fail piece by piece.

See http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=61557

The motherboard was replaced with an entirely different system and LMDE (Mint Debian) was installed or re-installed depending on how you want to view the situation.

To compare the before and after results it should be noted that the old MB had USB 1.0 and that the new MB has USB 2.0. As noted above, the old MB had a peak transfer rate of 3 and 4 mb/s which degraded to about 1 mb/s over 3 days of attempted heavy usage. The new MB has sustained transfer rates of just over 30 mb/s during operations involving media file transfers of 30 and 50 gig.

It should also be noted that the primary function of this computer had suddenly changed from "morning coffee news browser" that was happy running Mint 6 to "mid-night media fetcher/repository/player and distribution hub". The sudden change included the upgrade to LMDE and the attachment of a small sack full of USB devices including the external hard drive, an external DVD burner, and an assortment of MP3 players ranging from the Zen to some that we have no idea how to identify. Also this computer used to be turned for only a few hours a day to being left on 24/7.

We have no idea if this computer was in a state of slow decay before its roll change and we never knew it, or, if the sudden change had somehow caused this failure of the MB. I tend to believe in the first case but that is only a personal and unprofessional assumption.

Anyhow I hope this info might be of use to anyone in a similar situation.

you can take and get sound converter from the Repos and try to convert it or you can install VLC 1.1.4 I believe not in front of my PC at the moment and try that. I can play WMVs with VLC 1.1.4
