[Solved]Can't play encrypted DVDs in LM10 (Julia)

Postby deckard50 on Wed Dec 29, 2010 2:09 pm

Installed LM10 (Julia) on an ACER Aspire TimelineX 5820T. Hardware all works EXCEPT I can't play commercial (CSS encrypted) DVDs. Problem is not hardware - or with being able to mount the optical drive, as non-encrypted DVDs play w/no problem. Lots of posts on Ubuntu forums and other Linux forums (including this one) pointing to 2 packages that must be installed: a) libdvdcss2 and b) ubuntu-restricted-extras.

Both packages are already installed. Movie players being used are movie player and vlc player. Error message from Movie player is "Can't Read From Resource." Speculating that the movie players are not accessing the libdvdcss2 library.

Any help would be appreciated.

LM10 should play encypted dvds out-of-the-box (i think)

have you tried this -

Copy & paste -
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
into a terminal then hit Enter

then copy & paste -
Code: Select all
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
then hit Enter

**Now restart your pc/laptop

This will download & install the thing used 4 decrypting the dvd, info taking from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs

libdvdread4 was already installed. I removed it and then re-installed.

The second operation removed and re-installed libdvdcss2.

It makes no difference. Still can't read from the DVD.

Thanks for the tips, though.

Can't play ANY commercial DVDs at all? Or certain ones?

EVERY commercial DVD will not play. Tried about a dozen.

EVERY non-encrypted DVD I have, plays just fine.

Hmmm, there can be more reasons, however, make a test:

try to boot from CD like a Live version.
Then run it the usual way.
Also u can run it by terminal window so you will see some outputs there...

Then try again in classic boot, not live and run it just by terminal due the terminal output info...

Post both outputs then here.

OK. Launched mplayer from terminal on both Live CD boot (actually from a pendrive) and normal boot from hard drive. Not quite sure if the following is what you are looking for.

terminal output from launching mplayer (Live CD boot):

regionset was not installed. This fix is already posted on this forum on a different board:

viewtopic.php?f=91&t=3115&p=22972

Installing regionset and running it from terminal, setting the DVD region of the player to match the DVD region of the DVD fixed the problem.

Thanks all, for the help.

So, it's a new DVD drive, and never been used to play a movie?

Yes. A brand new laptop. The only DVDs I had played on it, were non-encrypted with the region encoding removed. I assumed the DVD drive would have been set to region 1.

My bad.

Ahhh, I see. Reasonable assumption there, and a mistake anyone could make. Glad you managed to resolve it. :)

install regionset. Then run it. It has been since my last post since I did so, but I think it is self-explanatory when you run it. Run from the command line.
