Encrypted DVD playing problem for only some users

Postby dkreithen on Fri Aug 05, 2011 8:16 pm

Hi - I'm setting up a new laptop using Linux Mint 11 (amd64). During the installation, I created an account called "administrator". All other user accounts were created after installation. I'm having a problem in which certain encrypted DVDs are playing just fine in both VLC and Mplayer, but only when logged in as administrator, but not any other user. Other users get broken audio and very broken video with some DVDs. Other DVDs are fine. All the DVDs are commercially produced movies. After the initial installation, I updated everything with the apt repositories, so everything should be up to date. This smells to me like some sort of permissions problem of some sort with at least one of the libraries, but I cannot be certain of this. Curiously, this did not happen to me in a previous install of Mint 11 on a different (desktop) machine. Any help would be welcome. Thanks.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Are the other users all members of the group "cdrom"?

Thanks for the reply. I was beginning to think that nobody was out there! Anyway, the answer is yes, I just checked and all users are members of the group cdrom.

Hmmm, not sure what else it might be to be honest. I only use 32bit, so i can't even do a straight compare. It is odd that it works for some, and not others. Can you check the user permission groups (Menu>Administration>Users and groups) and compare the groups that the users are members of, and compare them to yours, see what is different? I've never had any problem like you describe, so I'm a bit puzzled as to what to suggest, as I've never had to troubleshoot the issue myself. Let me know if you find any differences. Hopefully someone else using the 64bit version may see this and have an idea I do not.

The problem was solved by other means. I reinstalled on a new hard drive and the problem vanished. Not a clue as to how or why it was that way in the first place. Thank you for your replies.
