DVD-Ram

Post by bossa »

Been trying to burn on to some DVD-Ram discs I have with k3b ,but k3b does not do anything when I load the disc.
What do I need to do? Is it possible to burn to DVD-ram in Linux?

Hi
There is a problem with DVD-RAM with the latest K3b.

(DVD-RAM disks, this sort of rewritable disks accepts an unlimited number of burns)

Should be ok with DVD-R/RW

You could try k3b from Etch, that works

Hi

As it "should" be seen as a hard disc, can you not mount dev/whateveritis and drag and drop files? you might be limited
to 1GB files

Have you got DVD+-RW/R tools installed?
dvd+rw-tools makes it possible to burn DVD images created by dvdauthor or
genisoimage to DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, and DVD-RW disks, replacing
cdrecord-proDVD in many cases.

The package contains:

* growisofs to burn DVD images or create a data DVD on the fly
* dvd+rw-format to format a DVD+RW
* dvd+rw-mediainfo to give details about DVD disks

and some programs to control the write speed and obtain information from
DVD-RAM.

Also have you tried running K3b as root

Hi Nick

I am using the K3b downloaded with synaptic and yes I have DVD+-RW/R tools installed. Tried to download the package that said K3b Etch but it said the version already installed was a later version
I had these discs left over from a Panasonic DVD recorder I Had replaced it with a Hard drive recorder, so my idea was to use the DVD-Ram to at least store data.
How would I go about K3b as root...sorry I am new to Linux .

Hi

Best not to install the Etch K3b if you are newbie, and it
could cause problems.

To run k3b as root, open terminal and type

sudo k3b

You will get a few error messages, ignore

I am not sure if this will work but it might allow you to
mount them this way.

Hi Nick
OK tried k3b as root but it does not react when I install the DVD-Ram

Do you think there is another program that recognizes DVD-Ram ?

Hi

If your DVD is pre-formatted to UDF it should "open"
when inserted (I use KDE, so perhaps some Gnome users
can come in here) If so you can drag and drop files as
normal copying without k3b.

Also try installing udftools, in synaptic.
tools for UDF filesystems and DVD/CD-R(W) drives
This package contains a number of user-space tools related to
creating filesystems in the UDF (Universal Disk Format), which is
primarily used for DVDs, but sometimes also CD-ROMs:

mkudffs - Format a device, creating an empty UDF filesystem
cdrwtool - Low-level drive management (e.g. set writing speed, format)
pktsetup - Set up a packet writing device (/dev/pktcdvd0) for a drive
wrudf - Maintains a UDF filesystem

Homepage: http://sourceforge.net/projects/linux-udf/

You can format the discs to UDF using mkudffs, but it is
command line, never used it yet (dont have any DVD-Ram)

Its very interesting to read about the UDF format as I have just come across this problem. I have been passing my videos to DVD on my LG DVD recorder. When I insert the disc in my computer up pops the message about not being able to read UDF format.
I have come up against an error in terminal and I dont know if its relevant:

Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-david" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
Error: "/tmp/kde-david" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
Error: "/tmp/ksocket-david" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.

Can I solution this error at all?

Also if I want to copy the DVD udf format to had disk how would I do this.
Thanks
