My Daryna desktop looks pretty, fonts are anti-aliased and the fonts´ size and the laptop performance is c00l

But I'd like to set it up to 1280x1024@32 or @24.
1280x800 would be nice too...

I've searched the forum for '915' but threads are about enabling desktop effects I don't really need.

Any hint?

Thanx in advance

The 915 is OK but you need 915resolution, I could not see it
You can remove all the drivers for other video chips
This is Daryna main?
Post your xorg.conf

First backup xorg.conf:
Code: Select all
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf ~/xorg.confBAK

Then change:
Code: Select all
Section "Screen"
        Identifier      "Default Screen"
Device          "Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller"
        Monitor         "Generic Monitor"
        Defaultdepth    24
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth   24
                Virtual 1024    768
                Modes           "1024x768@60"   "800x600@60"    "800x600@56"    "640x480@60"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

to
Code: Select all
Section "Screen"
        Identifier      "Default Screen"
Device          "Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller"
        Monitor         "Generic Monitor"
        Defaultdepth    24
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth   24
                Virtual 1024    768
                Modes           "1280x800@60"   "1024x768@60"   "800x600@60"    "800x600@56"    "640x480@60"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

I think that should give you 1280x800 resolution... But be sure to backup xorg.conf FIRST!

Virtual 1024 768

Running in Virtualbox or VM ware?
I think you can remove the above line
My xorg.conf does not even have a "Section Display" and no resolutions listed
The way X is controlled has changed....

Not at all, but I have nvidia
I remembered that some time ago a lot of people had this kind of problem and I also remembered a solution
The refresh rates of your monitor may be out of sync
Run xvidune in a terminal and click Cancel in the popup that pops up
In the terminal you now have the vertical and (above all) horizontal sync rates for your monitor
Use these in "Section Monitor"

My xorg.conf
Code: Select all
# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
#   sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

In the terminal you now have the vertical and (above all) horizontal sync rates for your monitor
Use these in "Section Monitor"

xvidtune only tells me something xorg.conf yet have

In the following code snippet, the only thing I've added is the 1280x800 modeline line..
Code: Select all
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier      "Generic Monitor"
        Vendorname      "Generic LCD Display"
        Modelname       "LCD Panel 1280x800"
        Horizsync       31.5-50.0
        Vertrefresh     56.0 - 65.0
  modeline  "640x480@60" 25.2 640 656 752 800 480 490 492 525 -vsync -hsync
  modeline  "800x600@56" 36.0 800 824 896 1024 600 601 603 625 +hsync +vsync
  modeline  "800x600@60" 40.0 800 840 968 1056 600 601 605 628 +hsync +vsync
  modeline  "1024x768@60" 65.0 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -vsync -hsync

        Gamma   1.0
EndSection

...and commented out the Virtual Display line, thus I don't want a virtual desktop (by the way, it doesn't have anything in common with virtualization ;-)
Code: Select all
Section "Screen"
        Identifier      "Default Screen"
Device          "Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller"
        Monitor         "Generic Monitor"
        Defaultdepth    24
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth   24
#               Virtual 1024    768
                Modes   "1280x800@60" "1024x768@60"     "800x600@60"    "800x600@56"    "640x480@60"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

...then restarted X with CTRL+BACKSPACE but the resolution remains the same and the tool XFCE4 provides for changing resolution doesn't list 1280x800 in the drop-down list... :(

The horizontal sync values are very low...
Put the 1280x800 modeline line on top. The first line becomes default

I've done that even starting X in safe mode....
Seems like doesn´t care about my manual config...

This is what I get when I run xvidtune
Code: Select all
~$ xvidtune
Vendor: Generic LCD Display, Model: LCD Panel 1280x800
Num hsync: 1, Num vsync: 1
hsync range 0:  31.50 -  50.00
vsync range 0:  56.00 -  65.00

And the values
Code: Select all
modeline  "1280x800@60" 65.0 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -vsync -hsync

were copied from the 1024x768 line... I don't really know what to put there...

This is the correct modeline
It's calculated here
http://sh.nu/nvidia/gtf.php
Does not matter that nvidia is in the link - this is the same regardless of card
# 1280x800 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 49.68 kHz; pclk: 83.46 MHz
Modeline "1280x800_60.00" 83.46 1280 1344 1480 1680 800 801 804 828 -HSync +Vsync

I don't really know what to put there...

Well then don't - ask!
You are being helped....
I did not look at the modelines so I did not see that they were almost the same
Modelines should not have to be used, so I assumed you had gotten them from somewhere.....
Should have asked :)

Ummm try this:

sudo apt-get install 915resolution

then, do man 915resolution for usage details. This tool should accurately change the resolution where xorg can't always.

Give it a shot, and post the results.

Here it is....

Code: Select all
$ sudo 915resolution -l
Intel 800/900 Series VBIOS Hack : version 0.5.3

Chipset: 915GM
BIOS: TYPE 1
Mode Table Offset: $C0000 + $269
Mode Table Entries: 36

Mode 30 : 640x480, 8 bits/pixel
Mode 32 : 800x600, 8 bits/pixel
Mode 34 : 1024x768, 8 bits/pixel
Mode 38 : 1280x1024, 8 bits/pixel
Mode 3a : 1600x1200, 8 bits/pixel
Mode 3c : 1920x1440, 8 bits/pixel
Mode 41 : 640x480, 16 bits/pixel
Mode 43 : 800x600, 16 bits/pixel
Mode 45 : 1024x768, 16 bits/pixel
Mode 49 : 1280x1024, 16 bits/pixel
Mode 4b : 1600x1200, 16 bits/pixel
Mode 4d : 1920x1440, 16 bits/pixel
Mode 50 : 640x480, 32 bits/pixel
Mode 52 : 800x600, 32 bits/pixel
Mode 54 : 1024x768, 32 bits/pixel
Mode 58 : 1280x1024, 32 bits/pixel
Mode 5a : 1600x1200, 32 bits/pixel
Mode 5c : 1920x1440, 32 bits/pixel

BTW, the Mode 58 would be fine for me :D
The display isn't wide screen so perhaps 1280x800 isn't the best choice.

We've tried to help you get 1280x800 which is a difficult resolution and now you say
The display isn't wide screen so perhaps 1280x800 isn't the best choice.

and state that 1280x1024 may be the best for you

Don't waist our time and patience

Not wasting nobody's time since I've posted a lot of info here.

Maybe 1280x1024 is what I need, but I didn't know if the display supported it (915resolution tells me now that it does) and 1280x800 didn't sound as a «difficult resolution» for me.

 Take it easy, man.

I am learning the same way you were learning maybe decades or minutes ago.
I do appreciate your patience and generosity.

What Husse probably mean that if the panel do not support 1280x800 resolution, and you failed to mention it was not a widescreen means we have wasted our energy trying to solve a problem that has no possible solution. I always note, from the OEM install, the resolution, since in most cases it is set to max there. So my maximum resolution is 1280x800 and what fits my screen perfect.
Try:
Code: Select all
915resolution 1280 1024

Might require sudo..

OK, here are the info I can provide:

  • It's not a wide screen display, it's the Dell Latitude D510.
  • The propietary driver for WindowsXP used to put 1024x768 as max resolution.
  • LinuxMint "Daryna" based on Ubuntu 7.10 and using XFCE4 as desktop manager is running now at 1024x768, the default resolution after install.
  • Tweaking the x.org file for 1280x1024 from a TTY and then issuing xinit starts the X server but the screen seems to flash twice before showing the xterm (maybe it's falling into a lower res?)
  • 915resolution echoes the following, but I don't know if it sets anything somewhere...
    Code: Select all
    $ sudo 915resolution mode 1280 1024
Intel 800/900 Series VBIOS Hack : version 0.5.3

    Chipset: 915GM
    BIOS: TYPE 1
    Mode Table Offset: $C0000 + $269
    Mode Table Entries: 36
  • Issuing xvidtune from inside that X session, it shows the following screen...
    HDisplay: 1024
    HSyncStart: 1048
    HSyncEnd: 1184
    HTotal: 1344

    VDisplay: 768
    VSyncStart: 771
    VSyncEnd: 777
    VTotal: 806
...and this info in the terminal, after canceling it
    Code: Select all
Vendor: Generic LCD Display, Model: LCD Panel 1280x1024
Num hsync: 1, Num vsync: 1
    hsync range 0:  31.50 -  64.00
    vsync range 0:  56.00 -  65.00
  • X log shows something interesting... I don't want to paste all of it (it's about 50+KBytes) but may be some interesting lines here --ordered:

    Code: Select all
