lost sound in mint cassandra

something caused loss of sound, update, added multimedia program,or what. sound works fine in widows and on any live linux, including live cassandra, ubuntu, pclinuxos. have checked most multimedia for mute on and found nothing. any ideas? can you 'reload' basic sound somehow?

I am having the same problem only in Darnya. It just up and left after one of Linux Mint's prescribed updates. Any help would be appreciated.
