Toshiba Troubles

My sister has a Toshiba laptop (not sure what model) and I installed Mint on it about a week ago. She loves Mint and everything works well EXCEPT the sound. There is sound but the volume level is very low. All works good in xp (she double boots) but in Mint I can only get barely audible volume. I have checked all I know to check and did not know if someone may know of a fix. I appreciate all of the help I have gotten from this forum and I will appreciate just as much the help you send me this time.
