Sound only works in some programs.

I'm running the 32-bit version of Mint 12 on a Compaq nc6230 (everything stock, save for RAM having been upgraded), and have been trying to find a way to fix this for a couple weeks now. Sound works fine in MPD (though it's since been uninstalled) and VLC. However, it doesn't work at all in Firefox, Desura, Minitube or the command line version of VLC.

For relevant hardware:
Code: Select all
lspci | grep audio
00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)
lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M22 [Mobility Radeon X300]

If I run firefox from the terminal and go to youtube, all I get is
Code: Select all
Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
which shouldn't be the problem, since I don't have an nVidia card. Going here and trying to play the ogg file produces
Code: Select all
*** nsHTMLElement::FinishDecoderSetup() mDecoder=0xa2dab840 stream=0x9d3e7000 src=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/de/Reading_of_Little_Orphant_Annie.ogg

In case I'm missing a module:

Everything worked perfectly fine before, but just seemed to have stopped for some reason. Firefox didn't even update, just rebooted to find that sound was crippled for some reason, and I'm at a loss for the cause. I saw this thread, but I already had that package installed. I also tried installing Firefox nightly builds from a ppa (flash sucks in the regular release, but the video is fine in Nightly) but it too doesn't seem to want to play any sound for me.

Minitube will also play videos, but sound is absent. If I download the video, VLC can open it just fine from the GUI, but not from the console.

Mplayer also fails to play back audio for the video:

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, or links to some novel solution I may have missed. I've tried exercising my google-fu, but so far it's failed me. Thanks.
