weird vid problem, only plays fullscreen

so i got mint installed on my laptop i got for free here recently
its an hp ze2401
i plugged it in to the router today and got everything updated. got compiz-fusion up and running and something really dumb happened

totem will only play video full screen.
when its just in a window on the screen its just black and plays sound...

if anyone has any clue to whats causing this
