Nothings Perfect.......sigh.......

Postby Neuromancer on Fri Nov 06, 2009 11:17 pm

Ever since I tried to watch a video about Neal Stephensons latest book (its great) my sound has been on and off, and the journey begins...........from the Mint forums to the links to ubuntu to blogs back to mint back to ubuntu.....I have an HDA card on a EeePC, and I figure yup its pulse audio, but I've been bouncing backandforth to the same site and links, trying everything I could..........and then another reboot or sometimes for no reason sound was gone......all the lil warnings from PA would make me start again.......I thought maybe a fresh thread since I no longer know which ones went where............Also, if I force alsa to restart, I usually have sounds except the games installed........ok,

But then I discovered the sound works on all games only when launched from the cli?????? The menu icons produce silent games. Something I hadn't seen any posts about.....

Please don't make me try Kubuntu..........I admit, I looked at it today, the dvd, till I heard a demonic Jackalope scream DO IT!!!!.......then I came back to my senses, and figured first try to fix , or reinstall and set it up right the first time and leave it........or install Slack. If something doesn't work on slack I just figure its my fault.....

I did rip out PA by the roots violently to get some sound back semireliably, and theres still pulse blood on my hands.....is that a bad thing?

Any clues why games run silent or a flash / You tube trailer would just fsck up my sound for the past four days?

Thanks in advance if anyones got a clue that I keep missing...........

cheers

Sorry, I've had the same audio complaints I've seen here and numerous ubuntu links. Except this started when I tried to watch a YouTube interview..........the sound went.

I started following all leads here, adding comments, uncommenting, checking which processes were running, went to the idyllic tux how to...........and always had the sound come and go, randomly. Force restart, or another fix, then? on and off sound again.

My last step was to just remove everything pulse audio except the lib..........and sound still goes out randomly. But it works without any PA packages the same as it did with them, ie, half the time, maybe a bit more .......

The strange thing is that linux games with music or sfx? Run silently when launched from the menu, and run fine when run from a command line..........and many are packages that I just apt-got so its not a faulty menu entry......

I wondered if anyone else with sound problems has noticed the same, or if there is a fix /workaround to just keep alsa running......including from one boot to another........hope that cleared up the question as to the status of sound / Mint and Pulse / Alsa these days. Could it be something I didn't upgrade for example?

thanks
cheers

in short and with no lengthy geek explanations and tons of links to read, this is what i did and worked. this is all done in terminal. remember to enter your login password after the sudo command(s)

Code: Select all
sudo killall pulseaudio
sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install -y esound esound-clients esound-common libesd-alsa0
sudo apt-get remove paman padevchooser pavumeter pavucontrol
sudo reboot

cant remember if i used
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove paman padevchooser pavumeter pavucontrol
because just like you, i got really frustrated and wanted the damn thing work and just tried everything that i found after trolling around on the Google SERVER (figure of speech just in-case a geek debate starts up).

there is a thread in this forum explaining this, but where, F-Kn's....

regards

Thanks, I had already removed anything reeking of Pulse..........and apt-got the stuff you listed, some of which was installed already, and then the reboot. Still the same result for games (most other apps don't make noise so.......) and from the menu, they are silent.....cept FreeDoom  and SuperTux.......

The desktop sound fx go out still withot warning.......I just suddenly realize nothing has clicked for a while.....

So I tried to restart alsa once more and got the following response to: sudo alsa force-reload

<<< lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon file system /home/jibril/.gvfs
Output information may be incomplete.
Terminating processes: 3137lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon file system /home/jibril/.gvfs
Output information may be incomplete.
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon file system /home/jibril/.gvfs
Output information may be incomplete.
.
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon file system /home/jibril/.gvfs
Output information may be incomplete. >>>>

Then alsa proceeded to unload and reload and desktop sounds are back..........still no sound from games unless I launch from the cli

When I checked the .gvfs folder its empty, though I tried to find packages for gvfs....

Like you, It was starting to go in so many circles that I had to stop following the trail of links looping back to links after four or five pages here and a couple of ubuntu pages.........which I don't think is that helpful since there are some differences, and a lot of posts on ubuntu forums are downright wrong.......so........Perhaps this is a feature? If I absentmindedly try to click on a game in public no one has to hear the gunfire and bouncing tuxes? So I have to go to command line if I want to hear anything :?

I still think a default pulse has to go away, far away..........and seeing the latest kde on kubuntu and slack, I'm in no hurry for the new kde at all despite being a KDEr the whole time till now.....unless they do what mint did to gnome...........give it a serious makeover.......sound problems with linux on and off since RedHat 9.....?? Aarrgggg! All is unmuted, etc according to the best leads I found in setting alsa as default etc....

Sound just went again......completely.....now I'm thinking reinstall (the windows way, heh) finding another post like this, or running slack with XFCE on this netbook..........till I can stand the new KDE 'theme'' .......

What settings do have under sound in the Control Center? That seems to be behaving oddly when I try and hack around the outages and warnings from it.......And do games with audio work consistently? Thanks mate,

cheers

Thanks for the pics, that's basically what I had at the beginning, without thinking about it......till it seems online flash/video can kill Pulse , and thats when mine died...........I reinstalled, not just over sound, but hey, I had to see what Slack13 looks like and I have this Mint on my flash as well.........so on a new install I followed you pix to see what happens.........i have sound so far......

As a slack fan, or hell, a linux fan? The worst thing I've seen in years is KDE4...........I couldn't take the nonsense you had to go thru and how slow something like slack ran on it.............so I run slack in VBox on my Mint flash..........As a former KDE fan, this is scarey..........what I'd like to konw is what and how you got your desktop lookng that way, its a bueat of a screenshot........do tell.......

So now that I'm fresh minted on the lappy, we'll see what happens.........but before wiping it? I saw endless pages and vehement hatred of PAudio..........makes me hope gnome and others get beyond something so badly done..........alsa and OSS work,
