Thanks, I had already removed anything reeking of Pulse..........and apt-got the stuff you listed, some of which was installed already, and then the reboot. Still the same result for games (most other apps don't make noise so.......) and from the menu, they are silent.....cept FreeDoom

and SuperTux.......
The desktop sound fx go out still withot warning.......I just suddenly realize nothing has clicked for a while.....
So I tried to restart alsa once more and got the following response to: sudo alsa force-reload
<<< lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon file system /home/jibril/.gvfs
Output information may be incomplete.
Terminating processes: 3137lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon file system /home/jibril/.gvfs

.
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon file system /home/jibril/.gvfs

Then alsa proceeded to unload and reload and desktop sounds are back..........still no sound from games unless I launch from the cli
When I checked the .gvfs folder its empty, though I tried to find packages for gvfs....
Like you, It was starting to go in so many circles that I had to stop following the trail of links looping back to links after four or five pages here and a couple of ubuntu pages.........which I don't think is that helpful since there are some differences, and a lot of posts on ubuntu forums are downright wrong.......so........Perhaps this is a feature? If I absentmindedly try to click on a game in public no one has to hear the gunfire and bouncing tuxes? So I have to go to command line if I want to hear anything
I still think a default pulse has to go away, far away..........and seeing the latest kde on kubuntu and slack, I'm in no hurry for the new kde at all despite being a KDEr the whole time till now.....unless they do what mint did to gnome...........give it a serious makeover.......sound problems with linux on and off since RedHat 9.....?? Aarrgggg! All is unmuted, etc according to the best leads I found in setting alsa as default etc....
Sound just went again......completely.....now I'm thinking reinstall (the windows way,heh) finding another post like this, or running slack with XFCE on this netbook..........till I can stand the new KDE 'theme'' .......
What settings do have under sound in the Control Center? That seems to be behaving oddly when I try and hack around the outages and warnings from it.......And do games with audio work consistently? Thanks mate,
cheers
