I think you can use it without. But I'm not sure it is fully supported currently. On Linux Mint 11, 7 months ago, the iPod Classic 160GB wasn't supported. See here: http://community.linuxmint.com/hardware/view/7582 The libimobiledevice, a software library for interfacing with Apple devices, doesn't support iPod Classic AFAIK (http://www.libimobiledevice.org/).

Yes you can use the I-Pod Classic W/O an internet connection--Use GTKPod the Classic is in the drop down.

Note: All I-Pods need to be set-Up in I-Tunes before using with Linux
