Howto nvidia drivers on linux mint 13 xfce?

Postby lordofthemorning on Sun Sep 09, 2012 2:28 am

Hello, i'm trying to install the nvidia drivers, so i can work with Mixxx, apparently it doesn't function without (crash).

I have an Nvidia MX 4000. According to one source i need the 96.43.xx kernel. according to another the 173. According to NVIDIA website i need x86-100.14.11. That are 3 different versions...which one is right? :S

Just fooling around got me to a malfunctioning OS and i had to wipe it and reinstall. This time i'd like to do it right..

Can anyone help me out?

Please i am still a noob at linux, so a step by step guide would be well appreciated.

I do know how to open the terminal outside x-reach and login as root. I can browse to a folder. Adding repositories....maybe, but challenging

so...which driver should i install and which steps do i take? TY a lot!

Best is to install the recommended drivers which can be found in the Additional driver menu. This is a system option so you should find it under system settings.

I found something which might help you: http://downfromthetrees.com/how-to-fix-linux-mint-13-nvidia-driver-install.html. Don't get confused when other types of videocard is mentioned, the basics are the same.

Try the x-swat drivers:https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates

To add them to do this:

- open a terminal
- type the following command:
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates

- follow the instructions given in the terminal
- then type:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

The nvidia-96 legacy driver, which you need for this old card, is not available (yet?) for Mint 13. The latest 96.43.20 version is not yet Mint 13 compatible.
You can use Additional Drivers in Mint 9 and 12 (in 11 you can get the nvidia-96 package after adding the PPA like nomko said).
The normal "nvidia-current" driver does not support anything older than the GeForce 6 series.Trying to install the -current driver, even from a PPA, will not work - it might screw your system completely.

ah...yes that's what i did before, install the current drivers.

indeed the system broke.

So....if i understand correctly the best option i have is to wait till the 96 becomes available?

That or try an older linux mint...

If these games Severance blade of Darkness and Soulreaver 2 (under winxp, same pc) would not be so picky about the graphics card i would try another card...i'm sure i have something newer lying around somewhere... but they only work with the GeForce4 MX 4000 (or some still older cards i do not own), very annoying that :)

How about the drivers from nvidia website btw? that won't work either?

@nomko, what exactly are the x-swat-drivers? i see there are different versions there too? howto select one? and will that nvidia-graphics-drivers-96 be functional/compatible? It is all so confusing :S

From the Launchpad site of x-swat:
Updated versions of X.org drivers, libraries, etc. for Ubuntu.
This PPA is for stable upstream releases of X.org components. If you're looking for something even more bleeding-edge, please see the xorg-edgers PPA.
While Ubuntu does not "officially/formally" support these packages, if you discover problems when installing these debs please feel free to report bugs to launchpad. However, please make sure to clearly state that you are running packages from this PPA so we know the fixes need to come here.
If you are upgrading from one release to another with this PPA activated, please install the ppa-purge package and use it to downgrade everything in here beforehand. sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates will do it.

I found this site for the Nvidia-96 driver: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-96

That website nomko mentioned lists the 96.43.20 driver, which works on Mint 12 but does not work on 13. The non-functional 96.43.20 package is provided temporarily until NVIDIA releases a newer 96 driver. But according to http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=MTE4MTM, no new releases in the 96 and 71 series are planned. So you'll have to use Mint 9 or 12 if you want to install the driver.

And the PPA can be used to upgrade the driver to a newer version than the one provided by default, but in the case of nvidia-96 there is no newer version for Mint 13 (there is, however, a package in the PPA to make nvidia-96 working on Mint 11).

thanks Albert.

I have installed linux mint 9 now and the first thing i did was using Nomko's method to install the 96 NVIDIA drivers. They seem to operate perfectly :)

this topic can be closed, since the drivers will likely never be supported by Maya. (sadly)
