Corrupted/Messed Partitions, Cant delete volume/create/mod

Postby MEENOOS on Fri Mar 22, 2013 2:20 am

I have a dual boot system-- Linux Mint 14 and Windows 7. ( SONY VAIO 64bit, i5, 4GB/500GB)
Recently, while in the process of exploring, I got to know that around 12GB of space is showing as free space, before the windows boot partition.
I had 2 Primary partitions, and 2 logical partitions then, in which I have installed linux(1 NTFS, 1 EXT4).
My Partitions were like this
0-12GB-Unallocated or Free Space
1-105MB-Primary,Bootable, NFTS
2-227GB- C Drive- Windows Primary Partition
3- 211.7GB- Logical-NTFS(F Drive)
4-30GB-Logical, Linux

I wanted to use the 12GB also. I took 2GB from the free space for SWAP area for my Linux. (My hard disk is 500GB) and then it looked like this
0-2GB- SWAP area,(primary)
1-10GB-Unallocated or Free Space
2-105MB-Primary,Bootable, NFTS
3-227GB- C Drive- Windows Primary Partition
4- 211.7GB- Logical-NTFS(F Drive)
5-30GB-Logical, Linux

Since I already had 3 Primary Partition, I could not use that 10GB as another partition.
So I decided to test the partition moving with Gparted in live cd, and I shrunk the C-Drive(Windows OS) to free 120 GB from it, and made it a logical partition.
I deleted SWAP(2GB), and windows boot partition(took an image of it before doing so).
It was an attempt to recreate the same at the beginning of the disk, so that the free space becomes adjacent to CDrive.. I managed to recreate the boot partition..
But while the CDrive was extending, I happened to cancel it, and then the volume turned out to be 'unknown file system'..

Again, I tried to load windows recovery with CD, but nothing actually happened, tried many recovery methods, atleast to see my windows volume recognized as NTFS..

I tried with test disk, in the process, I messed up with Linux too, but somehow managed to get it back..
At present,
My Linux is fine, and my extended logical partition(F) is working fine..
My partition table looks like this:
dev/sda1 * 2048 206847 102400 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda2 23709696 23914495 102400 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda3 23914496 271128560 123607032+ 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda4 271129005 976784129 352827562+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda5 504643584 918048767 206702592 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda6 918050816 976771071 29360128 83 Linux

Other than that, i cannot do anything with my my disk now.. I managed to format unrecoginized volume, (it was a corrupt filesystem)

I attach screen shot of everything. plz plz help me..

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I'm very sorry meenoos, but I can't see how you are going to dig your way out of that hole. Attempting such massive reorganisation of your hard disk without a full disk image (clonezilla) to revert back to is like playing Russian Roulette with only one empty chamber.

You gambled and you lost. I think you have to start again from scratch.

I hope for your sake I am wrong, certainly don't do anything until you hear from other people, but it looks like you need to reinstall Windows to me (which of course will stop you booting Linux, then you will have to fix that :( ).

OTOH this could be just the spur you need to ditch windows altogether and just use linux. (I know there will be some hugely compelling reason why you can't do that, everyone says so - until they try it).

You rightly said Viking.. I was very much aware that I was gambling; but I did not know, why I did it.. Basic instinct, perhaps! I am working with the 'scratch'... I have my linux safe and perfect in my hard disk.. i am not attempting to do anything on it now..
and about ditching windows, I wont mind doing that, but I had some important files and some 100+ movies in my CDrive.. :-( which I dont want to loose.. So as if now, I am not doing anything with my CDrive... saddest part is that 120GB free space I cannot use now.. I will soon be getting an external hard disk, will try to recover important data, and get linux backed up, then repartition my hard disk again...
and I am using Just Linux.. :-) I used windows for reading my Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo and some ms office stuff, (which is important for my official work) but now that I have installed Office using wine, and it's running perfect.. So i dont have any reason left to give a second chance to Windows!

anyways thanks for the reply!
