HP Laptop and External HP Monitor

I am having issues with using my HP (Compaq 8430) laptop when docked, and hooked to an External HP 1825 monitor. When I try to setup a secondary monitor, it has the HP 1825 as a choice. I get it all setup, boot in the dock, and what I setup is gone.

It starts up in Low Resolution Mode, I configure the Monitor again, it boots into, but the Start Menu disappears off the left side of the screen.

When I go through the dialog of setting up the 1825 monitor, there is an "Add" choice, but that opens up the file manager looking for a file?

Are there more setup steps that are needed?

The laptop LCD is "widescreen" and the 1825 LCD is 4X3, but I do not have the Widescreen box checked when I attempt to setup the HP 1825 External monitor.
