USB DVBT SET UP HELP - PLEASE--SOLVED

Postby whammy on Sat May 05, 2012 8:50 am

Hi, I am driving myself nuts trying to get my KWORLD DVB-T- 399U dongle to work.
I have tried searching for the correct guidance and have found the relevant page on linux tv.org for my dongle and it says it is supported by linux and when I do a command lsusb in a terminal it is shown as connected. I have downloaded the programme Kaffeine but the sources for scanning is shown as empty.
According to the above wiki I need to install some ''firmware'' for this dongle and it directs me to the download for a file called dvb-usb-af9015.fw which I have downloaded and put on my desk top. It then says to copy that file to lib/firmware and then re connect the dongle.
I have tried to copy and paste this file to lib/firmware but when I come to paste the button is grayed out and it will not let me paste it into the firmware file ????
Further research leads me to believe I need to change permissions for the lib or firmware folder to allow me to copy and paste the file which led me to the chmod command in terminal but I have tried various command and to no avail, can someone help point me in the right direction using very basic instructions as you may have guessed I am not a wizard when it comes to linux workings.

You need administrator access to go into /lib/firmware. You can run sudo nautilus in terminal to open a file manager as admin and then copy the file to /lib/firmware (filesystem > lib > firmware). Then you should be able to use it; the driver is in the Linux kernel but probably needs a reboot to load the new firmware.

Thanks for that, have opened the firmware file as administrator and dragged and dropped it from my desk top, my dongle is now being recognised is Kaffeine.
Simple when you know how, THANKS for the reply
