Sound & Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family)

Hi,

I have problems with the sound on my Samsung Q40 notebook.
I tried to search dmesg and /var/log/messages, but I'm unsure which search pattern I should use

The problem is: I have no idea what's the name or manufacturer of the build in sound device.

I tried mplayer with all with "mplayer -ao help" given audio outprut drivers but to no avail.
And I tried with the GUI sound adjustment tool every available option and driver.
When I startup linuxmint, there is sometimes a high pitched sound, but that stops after a few seconds.

I still have the preinstalled XP on it but that don't give any more information about the sound device. [It's working well with XP, but I want to use only LinuxMint though]
By googling I found a review which states that Kubuntu Linux also works well on it...

Which is the best way for me to go?
And hints greatly appreciated.

I googled for it and there it was said a kernel >=2.6.24.3 is needed. My kernel is 2.6.22-14-generic.
Is that really true?

On another page it says, driver "ALSA HDA-Intel" works for it.

According to the GUI device manager there is already in use:

alsa.card_id HDA Intel

The linked character device to the audio output seems to be

crw-rw---- 1 root audio 115, 7 2008-03-01 14:24 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p

So, must it really be a new kernel then?

On a suse wiki I found the hint to edit /etc/modprobe.d/sound
I edited instead /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.
The wiki suggestion is to put in "option snd-hda-intel model=laptop". Unfortunately that won't really help.
Sound works, but with the above mentioned awfull high pitch sound.

On other pages I found the needed alsa* versions.
I'm updating Mint right now, maybe afterwards it's working.

I post here the results for others with same/similar sound card. (Or update this post? Which one is better for the other readers?)
