Asus Eee PC

Has anyone installed Linux Mint on the Asus Eee PC? I've read that you should turn off file swapping so not to use up the memory read/write limit. How do you turn that off? I was wondering if anyone had a list of does and don't for installing this on my Eee PC. Thanks for the help.

I was about to buy one then found out they are releasing a new model later this year with a 9 inch screen. So I'm waiting for this one.

I remember one guy installing it, he had some issues with the wireless, otherwise I think it worked nicely. Not sure though.

It installs fine on the eee. Just use this method here and it couldn't be easier.
I recommend using the built in drive to install to though, it's faster that way.

I have been waiting for a distro that has support for the Eee built in and while I was on vacation, Mandriva 2008.1 came out with official support. So I installed 2008.1 on my 16GB SDHC class 6 Patriot card from my USB dvd-rom drive.

Had issues making partitions in manual ... ended up with 4GB ext3 Partition 1 for / and balance partition 5 ext3 for /home. I did not use swap since I have 1GB of ram.

On 1st boot it went to the terminal so I held the power button and rebooted OK into gnome desktop.

Had the low battery warning the first time but clicked on do not show message again and it's gone.

It also installs the wireless on 1st boot.

Installed the samba client to have access to my windows network.

Takes longer to boot then original OS however but it really looks great !

If a Minteee version was available, it would be very good promotion for Linux Mint.
Many thousand Eee's on the market looking for a distro ...

You can pre-order the newest EEE PC already. It's kinda expensive though, it's starting to get into proper laptop prices. Be warned though, there is an even newer model coming out at the end of the summer using Intels new more energy efficient chips which would give you better battery life.

I was looking at the new 900 with the 9'' screen but I think Asus may be going over the price point people are willing to pay with this one.

The new 900 will be over well 600$ ... I don't think this model will sell that well.

The thing is EEE PCs are selling like hot cakes, so worse case scenario they just keep selling loads of the old model and pick up a few higher end customers. Id like to think in 6 months time theres a 9incher at the original price.
