crash then no sound and no sound level in dial

I would greatly appreciate your help. I have used Linux mint for 8 months but I don't know computer engineering. I was looking at a downloaded text in the jpg format with Okular when the computer froze and didn't respond to xkill,etc.I was forced to turn off the power. I especially did not want to do this as the computer is a dual boot with Linux Mint 12 LXDE and Windows XP prof.and I had had problems with booting after I "worked on the partitions a little." It crashed when I tried to reboot going very slowly through the checking process. It boots fine now After reboot the computer has no sound.I re-installed some components suggested in other forums.The info from system manager is:Audio Device Domain 0
Bus Device Function 0,27,0
Dell Corp.
IRQ 11
Bus master yes
I should also note that post crash I can't re-install the now missing Adobe Flash
The colunn indicator has no indicator line in the volume neter but is not muted.
The computer is a Dell Dimension E5310 with intel 2.80
