Compatible GPU and drivers

Hi

I am contemplating purchasing a new gpu for Mint 13 32 mate and cinnamon. Is there a definite list of supported models or chipsets etc.

At present i have a AMD/ATI Gigabyte 4670 Radeon hd 512 mb gddr3 do you think this will work.

Or is it all trial and error. Could i also copy somebodys gpu spec on this forum, where their card works, would it also work for me.

I just went through the same issues, but with a different Radeon card. From what I read, the 4670 should be fine. I used several threads to work through mine (HD6950), and I found this one to be the most helpful:

Use the Ubuntu supplied packages shown in section 3. I tried both (Ubuntu and direct from AMD) and I found that with the 32 bit, I get an error compiling because the install looks for a 64 bit file that cannot be generated on the 32 bit versions.
