Can't log into my computer

Postby waldzorn on Thu Jun 07, 2012 5:43 pm

Here's the situation;

My girlfriend changed my password on my computer. She thought she was being decidedly clever. Anyways, I logged in through the guest option, to check my email and such the next morning. However, when she came back today and told me her new, clever password, I was unable to log in. It was an issue of forgotten password, nay, when I entered the wrong password it indicated that it was in fact the wrong password. However, when I entered the correct password, it brought me to a black screen, which displayed some writing, and quickly kicked me back to the log in screen before I could read anything. I'm not sure what the issue is. I've shut down the computer multiple times, but I have no idea what to do because I can't tell what exactly is wrong. The Guest login still works just fine, and I can access all my files from it.

anyways, I took a pictures and I've written down what the black screen says below (the first bit, is what appears on the right side of the screen, the second bit is what appears on the left):

*Stopping Failsafe Boot Delay
*Stopping System V initialisation compatibility
*Stopping cold plug devices
*Starting System V runlevel compatibility
*Starting CPU interrupts balancing daemon

daemon

1 machine *Stopping save kernel messages

tiny CUPS printing spooler/server

ons saned disabled; edit/etc/default/saned

*checking battery state...

(and then this part is what appears on the right of the screen)

[ ok ]
[ ok ]
[ ok ]
[ ok ]
[ ok ]
[ ok ]
[ ok ] *Starting deferred execution scheduler
*starting regular background program process
[ ok ]
[ ok ]*Starting LightDM Display Manager
[ ok ]*Starting ACPI daemon
[ ok ]*starting save kernel messages
*VirtualBox Additions disabled, not in a virtual...
[ ok ]
[ ok ]*Starting configure network device security
*Starting bluetooth
[ ok ]
[ ok ]
*PulseAudio configured for per-user

aaaand then it boots me out and back to the login screen. I'm logged into the guest account now. Thanks for the help in advanced!

The only thing that I can think of suggesting is to create a new user, go to your terminal and chown anything important to your new user. Then remove the old user. That is if you have anything you can't access from your new user.

I can't create a new user account. It's telling me that I don't have the root password (which I thought would be what my girlfriend changed my password to). From the guest login, I can't access any files, I can't mount my external hard drive, or my flash drive, and so the only option available is borrow someone else's computer, so I can remove the internal HD, and extract all the files, and format the entire system. Is there anything I can do? Literally anything????

Please help!

Boot from a live CD, mount the offending system, chroot into it, change the password.

Will post proper instructions later, I'm mobile right now so its kind of hard. Maybe my hints will help you find a step by step on google?

Edit: Found a easy guide for you ... http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/linux/re ... e-live-cd/
