ACPI call freezes Dell Latitude X300

Postby rasmack on Thu Mar 20, 2008 5:58 am

I am having an annoying problem with my laptop. Power management in general works well. The laptop suspends when I tell it to and it wakes up when asked to. However, whenever I close the lid of the laptop it just freezes up. This happens no matter which action I have configured for this event. Even the REISUB trick doesn't work. My naïve guess would be that I have a buggy bios and that I need to fix the ACPI calls in some way. Last time I had to do this was 3-4 years ago on another distro so I have absolutely no recollection of what I did. ;) Any suggestions?

System is Daryna (Linux elefantino 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Tue Feb 12 07:42:25 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux) fully updated.

Edit: Booting without ACPI fixes the problem but this is not really desirable.

Do you have any chance of disabling the lid button?
I have very little first hand knowledge of Dell but what about an entry in BIOS to disable?

I'll check it but that raises the problem on resume from suspend which reacts on the lid being opened... ;)

Edit: A little research on what used to be the solution for problems like this yielded this page about using custom DSDTs. Is this still workable and does anyone have experience with it?

The DSDT should be valid, but I have no experience (well behaved hardware :))

OK, I tried downloading and compiling a patched dsdt from sourceforge. I also got it into the initrd and a dmesg confirms it being read. It doesn't solve the problem, however. Is there any conceptual difference in the way that the KDE and Gnome versions of Mint handle acpi? Would it make sense to check out the KDE version?

Perhaps...
Mint main (gnome) was forked off Ubuntu with Barbara based on Edgy and has evolved ever since.
Daryna KDE is based on Kubuntu 7.10 and mintified (a h-ll of a lot of work :))
This is not good from a pure support perspective though - Ubuntu changed a lot in printing between Feisty and Gutsy while Daryna main kept it basically as in Feisty.... Has not much to do with acpi, but it implies that there may be other differences that has to do with acpi.
I don't get very many questions about it though

Well, I s'pose I can learn to live with having to suspend before closing the lid... Thanks for your input.
