CD-RW Drive won't write

I'm working through my first linux installation. Most things are working pretty well and I'm very pleased with Linux Mint.

One problem that popped up last night - I was trying to write a data cd. When I inserted the blank cd the system asked if I wanted to make an audio cd or a data cd. I selected data and it opened a window for writing a cd. I selected the files, pressed "write to disk", it made the disc image and then the window said "writing files to disc" - but nothing ever happened. Finally it said it was unable to write.

Before I replace the drive, are there anythings I can try to overcome this problem?

Please first of all put here the specs of your system, specially if it is a laptop or not. I have a Dell D505 laptop, and beause of a problem with I-don't-remember-what, the CDRW unit could not write CDs. Try brasero for burning CDs because it shows you output of what's going on, and you can told us then which error show you.
