Mic won't work solved

Postby betch23 on Mon Mar 24, 2008 4:22 pm

Hello Everyone. I am a bit of a newbie to Linux. I installed Mint. After I updated it, my microphone jack on my IBM laptop won't work. I have tested the mic with sound recorder and skype, but nothing. I get sound fine, but no mic. Any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

There seems to be a general problems with jacks for sound.....
Please tell us at least something about your laptop if we are to help you.
Not so much the model of the laptop as it's mostly completely hopeless to find anything out from that
Which soundchip(s)?
If you don't have documentation do
Code: Select all
lspci | grep audio

Which version of Mint?

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it

I forgot to mention. I can hear my voice through my speakers, but I can't record any sound with the sound recorder or get any sound from the MIC on Skype. Hope this helps.

Ah, well since you can hear your voice, I know the problem.

Open volume control>edit>preferences>

Check mark microphone&micboost, if you have it plugged into the front mic port check the front mics not the mic.
Check mark analog mix, if your hearing yourself through your speakers chances are your mic is working you just haven't setup the recording.

In preferences checkmark the capture option, in addition to the input source option, just check the first of each, input and capture.

Two new tabs should have appeared in your volume control, the ones we're looking for are recording and options.
Make sure capture is turned on, not muted, then go in input and change the input source dropdown to where you want the recording to come from.(IE front mic boost, mic boost, etc)

You should have the input source correctly set, capture turned on and set to at least 70%, mute analog mix so you can stop hearing yourself, depending on your mic setup; in playback your mic needs to be set to a estimated tolerable volume.

Open sound recorder, select capture or whatever microphone you set it to, and it should work fine.

Okay, I didn't realize that you had to right click on the sound icon in the corner, but after that, it began to work. Thanks!
