Help! My system won't shutdown!

Hello folks,
Frequently my system does not shutdown. Doesn't matter if I'm using the menu button, the terminal command or if I logout before.
It wont shutdown.

The screen turns to black, becames unresponsive to any command (even the capslock led) and it appear:

And from minute to minute some data scrolls in the screen: http://i.imgur.com/z1utE.jpg http://i.imgur.com/my4WV.jpg

It is the same bug as reported in here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1024175

Everytime it happens I have to hard shutdown using the power button but I'm afraid of harming the system. Sometimes it does not boot properly after hard shutdown.
Don't know what to do. The first screen shows "fglrx" but I think it's not related, cause it happened once before I installed the fglrx drivers.

More info:
Laptop: HP Pavillion dv6, Phenon II quadcore N970, with hybrid GPU (HD4200 integrated and HD6550 which is always off)
System: Mint 13, 64bits, Cinnamon desktop, original kernel: 3.2.0-23-generic. (dual boot with win 7)
I have already installed a lot of stuff and updated everything possible except the kernel. But the bug was happening since the beginning.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hy Rivello

I have the same problem whit similar hardware configuration end I haven't found a solution...I don't remember when it occour the first time (before or after installing ATI proprietary drivers).

Usually I do a "r" command (alt+F2) a moment after I will shutown...but at present I don't know if it is right to avoid the problem.

Hello guys,

After a lot of headache I decided to change to ubuntu 12.04 and install Cinnamon there. Worked as a charm.
No screen glitches anymore, turns off perfectly well, even with ATI proprietary drivers installed.

And I noticed something interesting:
When I stop lightdm service (mdm in case of Mint) the same screen with that text from hell appears on the screen, but it just appears and go to command prompt instead of keeping scrolling forever.

Probably the problem is with the X display manager, when the system tries to stop it.
Maybe stopping it manually before shutting down would solve, anyone able to try? (I'm not in mint anymore)

Also is there a way to change from the mdm to another one, like lightdm which works on ubuntu?

Regards,

i had the same problem.
i solved it my entering the Cinnamon settings (The one near the clock-the arrow pointed upside) and clicking the Troubleshoot, and then Restore all settings to default.
nothing...the problem in still there after 1 normal shutdown

problem solved.
i uninstalled the video driver from the "System Tools"--"System Configuration"--"Additional drivers"--"ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" and now everything it's working just fine.
