I just got a new toshiba laptop, sound works fine on windows however I can't get theough internal speakers working on linux (Mint 13 Mate), headphones work fine though. I have tried a lot of potential fixes from these and ubuntu forms mostly, none of which have worked.

If required I will do a new install of mint if something I might have done might have made the problem worse, the only thing that strikes me as a possible problem is that I followed these instructions: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9935365 attempting to install some drivers off of the realtek site to fix the problem

Hello
Please bring up a terminal and type in 'alsamixer'
See if your speakers are muted (MM) or working (00)
use the arrow keys to select and the M key to mute or unmute.

For some reason the are where mute normally would be is just blank space except on S/PDIF, and that one doesn't seem to do anything, no sound whether it is muted or not with speakers, sound whether or not it is muted with headphones. Screenshot to show what I mean

frankly, that is really weird looking. Your hardware isn't being detected properly.
I would first mute the S/PDIF , reboot and see if that forces detection of your hardware.
Then I would also bring up Package manager and do a reinstall of all the Alsa packages.
Also check your Sound Manager and see if you have the Built in audio selected instead
of any other.
Beyond that not sure why your hardware is not detected.
If you want to try a fresh install of Mint then I would recommend you doing a Google for MHDD
and burn it to a CD then use it to fully ERASE your hard-drive before installing Mint. That will prevent
any old files from being picked up

As this is my second install of mint already (I did so many things to the first one trying to fix the problem I decided that I would reinstall to decrease the chance of one "fix" messing up one that would actually work), I am only planning to reinstall if someone has some method that seems like it has a good chance of working.

Tried your S/PDIF and reinstall ideas, neither had any effect.

Sound Manager only sees one device, there are some links to screenshots of it in my first post. they say image and each have their own line.

Just tested with a linuxmint 13 Cinnamon live usb and it also had no sound, alsamixer and sound manager both looked the exact same.

Having tried Fedora 17 just now, sound did not work initially however after installing all the updates it did. Looking at alsamixer on it there is just a Master control (which does have a mute) on a normal run however alsamixer -c 0 will get the same set of controls as I have on mint. The kernel on Fedora seems to be much more recent 3.5.... instead of 3.2...., is it possible that the mint kernel is just two outdated to support the speaker or soundcard properly?

Edit: Solved, this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1032230 was affecting me and updating to the latest version of the kernel with this command "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" updated me to a more recent version of the kernel and fixed the problem.

Adjunct that may help someone.

I also did the various upgrades but I found that there are two volume control panels along with a nice little bug.
1) PulseAudio volume control
2) ALSA mixer.

The ALSA mixer can get gotten from the speaker at bottom right
The PulseAudio from the Media menu.

The problem -- the PulseAudio got muted. Turned it on an all worked.

The bug

If I mute the ALSA master it mutes the pulse-audio master as expected. But if I unmute the ALSA master it doesn't unmute the PulseAudio so no sound until I go to the PulseAudio control panel and fix it.
