Does anyone know of a way to disable the discrete Nvidia (Ion chip) GPU on the above-mentioned computer?
Was hoping this netbook would be a light, long-battery life option. Problem is that its power use is too high. Presumably I should get 6 hours of battery life, but on Mint it's about 2.5 hours. Power use is generally 14W-20W.
I tried to install and use both bumblebee (initially) and then ironhide. My configuration is: 32bit Mint, newly installed, some added software (most pertinent, perhaps, I have jupiter w/ eee support, and also laptop-mode-tools). I don't know if I have the most recent bios.
I'm guessing that my power use is the result of the discrete GPU being active. Is there some simple way to shut it entirely off? Bumblebee and ironhide don't seem to work for me (see below).
With bumblebee, I used the Mint Optimus tutorial. On reboot, bumblebeed wasn't running. I tried bumblebeed -D from the command line. It took the command, gave me a new prompt, but bumblebeed didn't show in ps and the command "optirun glxspheres" said that it couldn't find bumblebeed.
I also tried the Mint ironhide tutorial. Before installing, I installed the x-updates ppa and updated. Had to install virtualgl 32 bit from .deb file for some reason. On reboot, I ran the ironhide configuration tool. It said it couldn't recognize my laptop. On the manual install it terminated telling me I needed to tell it the BusID of the GPU in xorg.conf (don't know the id or where to put it in xorg). On configurations, it listed the name Acer repeatedly, but nothing else, and I couldn't scroll. When I hit 'yes' I got the BusID error again.
