Interference & screen flickering

Postby regikeyz on Wed Aug 22, 2012 6:30 pm

Hi,

I'm a new user, I bought the Mintbox and it arrived today. It came pre-installed with Mint 13, Cinnamon, I updated the Mint via Update shield to latest updates, v 13.2 I think it was. Problem described below existed before and after the update.

I've been enjoying playing with Mint, going through the tutorials but I have problems with the screen flickering, when I go to certain applications eg Tomboy Notes especially (also a little with the Update Shield icon in bottom right of screen). The screen gets strong interference patterns and flickers for half a second. Now this doesn't effect the Mint OS, it just looks ugly and feels as if something is wrong.

I tried with my Dell U2410 24" Monitor 1920 x 1200, I tried the HDMI connection and via the Display Port. I have two U2410 monitors, I tried them both, I also tried a longer cable so monitor was 1.5meters away and the screen still flickered.

Does anyone else have this issue or know what the issue could be?

Thank-you Kindly

I have the same issue, but I would describe it as more of a shiver. In compiz, there's a setting that makes a window shiver when you switch between windows, but I have that disabled. It's most noticable when I switch between my browser and other applications.

Hi,

I'm new to LInux (and Mint) so excuse any beginner questions..! Are you saying :

1) You also have a Mintbox
2) the Mintbox has Compiz installed on it
3) There is a setting that deliberately makes the windows 'shiver' (my window doesnt shiver, it just looks rainbows up for half a sec when I click certain apps)
4) If your shiver is the same as my interference/flicker, is there a way I can stop this happening?

Thank-you very much

I'm fairly new to linux as well, but to answer your questions, yes I have LM 13, with compiz, and I could be wrong about this, but I think there IS a setting in compiz that makes a window shiver on mouse focus, but like I said, I could be wrong. All that I know is that I was messing with compiz settings when this problem began, and to answer your last question, I haven't found a solution yet. Myabe someone else will chime in.

I am running cinnamon Maya on a HP/Compaq PC hooked up via HDMI with an ati card (forget which model) hooked up to a TV. Whenever I change the channel to a TV program then back to the HDMI connection my screen will flicker. It is not TV related as Ubuntu will work just fine no flicker with same setup. Have yet to look into compiz settings as I am not able to test at the moment.

Thank-you would be very interested to hear back when you get a chance to test settings.

If anyone else has similar issues/solutions please post em!

Thanks boys and girls! (but probably mostly boys!)

Hello,
I recommend you try these steps first:

1.Disable Compiz and use your system for a while; by doing so, you should prevent PowerMizer from having to switch the power supply by ensuring the load on your GFX card never passes a certain level. If it’s still flickering, something else is the culprit.
2.Run Compiz with the –loose-binding option but not with –indirect-rendering. If you’re using fusion-icon, which I heavily recommend, you can right-click it and toggle these under “Compiz Options”. If you’re manually starting it, you’ll need to add/remove these switches to whatever process you use to start it.
3.Open CompizConfig Settings Manager, and in the Workarounds settings, under Utility, enable Force Synchronization between X and GLX.
4.If steps 2 or 3 worked, play around with those three settings until you find something that works for you. I personally enable loose binding due to the performance increase it gives me, but your mileage may vary.
It may help you :)
Thanks!

Hi, I've only just seen your reply, thank-you very much, I'll try this out later tonight when Im home.

I've only been using Linux 2 weeks, I'm not sure how to disable Compiz, but I'll see if I can figure it out, I'm starting to get hang of shell now.. I'll do a ps aux and see if I can see process there, tho perhaps I need to look in the setting..

Thank-you for taking time to offer a solution mate
