Epson DX8400 Printer Driver

I'm having trouble getting Mint to recognise my printer driver from avasys site (http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/spc/DL1.do).
scanner is working fine but the driver for DX8400 is not recognised in the list of printers even though driver has been installed.
Ubuntu and Xubuntu both work ok with the drivers from avasys. any ideas why dx8400 does not show up in the list I can see cx8300 and cx8400 but these don't work my printer.
