Keyboard delay

During boot phase it takes approximately one full minute at the login screen before the usb keyboard is recognized.

Have tried different usb ports as well as a different keyboard with same results. The usb mouse however is recognized instantly.

What might be causing this? Fixable?

The version of the USB device, but it doesn't usually take very long to recognize a usb device on boot since the usb support gets loaded by the OS..
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus

I don't know for sure, but if you could you might want to either try your keyboard on some other computer that is running windows OS and see how well it detects the keyboard; if it also has a problem, then you might research the actual brand/model number for any issues
--the usb wiring for the keyboard comes from that vendor and usually should be straightforward to use

Also you might consider switching parts with the mouse, see how well that is working
--additionally clean any device contacts, pure alcohol (90% available from a drug store to clean the surface area of the device: port and jack) or any other electronics cleaner you have (degrease etc..)

The OS parts ..
The keyboard as is selected, is it a version that you don't have the full software support included in the OS
--check you system settings for keyboard/language; the usual standard keyboard is 105 us pc keyboard (the connection isn't important, if it works..)
--are you trying to use a brand name selection (might not be well supported), generic keyboard types are usually better to use
--are you trying to use a media keyboard with lots of extraneous selection keys or one with an extra large number of keys..

More information to work with.

This is an established system having been built years ago. Have been using Mint 13 Mate installing the safe updates as they become available.

Tested with a Mint live disc. Keyboard is immediately recognized during post. NUMLOCK goes out during boot. At the login prompt takes about a minute before keyboard is recognized again.

Both keyboards work perfectly fine on my other Mint system

Have not made any changes to BIOS other than boot sequence preferences.

OK, so what is the new boot sequence setup: usb as first boot ?
--I have to ask, since you don't say what is your boot setup..

OK, so I would try to refresh the system..

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
--refresh source list
sudo apt-get upgrade
--refresh installed programs..

My boot sequence is straight to the SATA hard disc

I "may' have resolved this. Using the term may until enough starts confirm it.

Past history has taught me to look at hardware when in doubt. Since I had a known good spare power supply available I swapped it in. At the same time I also blew out collected dust. Wasn't overly dusty but the cleaning was clearly due.

System currently is booting fine. Was it the power supply?, dust?, or combination of both? Don't know. Just hoping it keeps working.
