Asus 1000H Webcam Driver

Postby juwper on Fri Oct 26, 2012 6:33 pm

Hello people!

I am newbie in linux, just installed a few distros and decided Linux Mint is the best choice for me.
I am using it on a netbook: Asus 1000H EEE Pc.

Everything is working well except for 2 things:
1) Webcam driver is not present, programs lke Skype and others don't recognise i have a webcam.
2) Pidgin and other messenger programs won't connect.

Any thoughts of what I can do to be able to use them?

Many thanks,
Juwper

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Which Linux Mint version are you using, and which desktop environment? Please also include the output from the following two commands run from the terminal (you can copy text to/from the terminal, see its Edit menu).

No webcam driver is needed.

The linux kernal automatically supports webcams.

Click the Linux mint Start menu, by doing the following:-

Menu -> Administration -> Software Manager

With Software Manager launched, type Cheese in the Search Box. Double click it in the search results and install it.

Once installed, click the Linux ment Start menu, by doing the following:-

Menu -> Sound & Video -> Cheese

Voila, web cam works. Like I said, support for webcams is already part of the Linux Kernal, but for the webcam to work it needs software to talk to the driver to display the image / video (of which Cheese accompishes this).

I have an Asus 1000HE btw which is similar to your 1000H netbook :)

I used the method in the link below to be sure that my webcam worked in Lubuntu 12.04 on my 1000H.

Although I had a hunch it worked out of the box I applied the fix as soon as I installed Skype so never witnessed the webcam not working in 12.04.
