Weird Sound Problem

Well, I recently started migrating from Windows Vista to Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna and I have had few problems. One problem was WiFi, but I got that fixed. Well my sound acts funny. It works just fine. My headphones though act strangely. They work just fine, it's just that my speakers still output sound when I have headphones plugged in. So they are playing in unison. I want to be able to use my headphones with my speakers being muted. How do I do this?

If you told us what hardware you use it is much easier to answer your question - now I can't answer as I don't have the facts.....

Well, I believe I have a Conexant Sound Card and I am using the ALSA driver. I cannot remember the brand of my headphones, but they run through an audio jack.
