I have an s3 and I like you don't use google contacts as I don't want that info out on the net. so what I did was connect via usb cable and first on the phone when in contacts hit the menu button at the left of the home button. the menu comes up with import/export. I then exported to my external sd card on the phone just in case something gets goofy. then mint mounted the phone I could see it as ext storage, then in thunderbird I went to tools > import put the radio button for addressbook. and then selected cvf for the file type. I think you will have to do this when adding new contacts. and it didn't get all the feilds that are on the phone so some tweeking will have to be done. but it's better than typing it all in.

I just installed Airdroid v2 from the googleplaystore on my galaxy s3, it was a breeze and seems to work perfectly, I assume because it's browser based. All you have to do is run the app on the phone, it gives you a local network IP address, enter that address in the computer's browser, then on the phone accept the request to connect from the computer. From the computer you can read/write/delete files, work with your contacts, do texting, operate the camera remotely, and a whole pile of other things. I'm using Mint13, 32 bit, but I doubt it matters.

I used Airdroid for a while, but when I took a closer look at the permissions it demands - http://www.appbrain.com/app/airdroid/com.sand.airdroid - I removed it. I know people say it is safe, but that is too much for me.

I have Samsung S3 and had issues mounting until I removed additional SD Card...

There articles explain howto setup MTP and then it works right away...

Mounting fails for me when I have external SD Card present.
If you also have also external SD Card plugged in then please try removing it and then try mounting again.
