Laptop Running Very Hot

I'm very new to Linux, and recently installed Maya (mate) on my Dell 700m laptop a few weeks ago. SInce then I've noticed that it runs very hot, with the fans on seemingly full power all the time. Running the sensors applet regularly shows a udisks sensor at 104 degrees F, and the libsensors at over 170 and 140 degrees. As it heats up, the computer gets slower and slower. I did not have this problem running Windows XP, but I really don't want to have to go back. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

is it that laptop? it seems pretty old.

usually, in my opinion, the high temp comes from a kernel and video driver.
i think it is not much you can do about this and need to roll back to W xp.

you still can try a distribution with older kernel, like cent-os 6.x wich has 2.x kernel.

but you better run the OS who keep your hardware at the lowest temp possible due to the fact that, on the long run, high temp can demage your laptop.
