Re: Xonar DX CMI8788 worked in Mint 13 but not in Mint 14,15

Yes, I tried the GNOME-alsamixer. Fiddled with everything, to no avail.
____@desktop:~$ sudo modprobe -r snd-virtuoso
[sudo] password for ____:
FATAL: Module snd_virtuoso is in use.
So, I gather that I have to deactivate virtuoso or boot into a different mode in order to do this..?

I tried CTRL-ALT-F2, but this gave the same message.

I've never had a problem like this with a sound card, but you might try:

- shutdown any audio/video apps you have running
- turning off any login or alert sounds you have configured
- reboot and see if you can unload the module with the same command

If that doesn't work, you could try:

sudo modprobe -rf snd-virtuoso

to try to force the module to unload.

Sadly, I've had no luck with this.

I physically removed the Xonar DX, and replaced it with a Xonar DGX. The behaviour of Mint is the same. No audio from either of the headphone devices, or the speaker output device. Here is the audio output devices screen for the DGX in Mint 16:

Still not fixed, but I am exploring AMD-Vi and IOMMU as possible culprits.

Hope you get it fixed or that it works on Mint 17 (LTS) when it comes out. I was actually thinking of getting one of the Xonar cards and although I'm using Mint 13, I would like it to work on newer versions of Mint as well (especially the LTS versions).

Good news: Disabling IOMMU in BIOS allows the Xonar DGX to function (audio is produced through the card's outputs)

Bad news: The Mint 16 seems to need a reminder of what volume level it was at before shutdown/reboot. The starting chime ("login.oga") plays at full volume (OUCH!).

More bad news: In order to get my Xonar DGX working, I have to disable AMD-Virtualization (IOMMU). This has implications for running virtual machines, and is arguably a bug. There are some threads that mention IOMMU at the BIOS level versus at the kernel level, but none go into enough detail to elucidate why this kind of bug might manifest. It's all voodoo to me.

This also reveals that expanded details may be relevant to the problem I experienced:

MOBO: Gigabyte F2A85X-UP4
BIOS version: F4, 03/13/2013

Re: Xonar DX/DGX audio not working since Mint 14 - IOMMU bug

Post by yaye »

I finally got a Xonar DGX a few days ago. It works with Linux Mint 17.3 64-Bit, MATE desktop. Seems the audio output defaults to the Front Panel Headphones (Headphones FP). I use headphones most of the time I'm on the computer. To get audio going to the speakers at the rear panel, from a terminal, run alsamixer (not GNOME Alsamixer), and using the arrow keys, go over to Analog Output and change Headphones FP to Multichannel or Headphones. See the link below for the settings I use to get Audacity to record with the Xonar DGX:
