I have been using Linux Mint 13 64 cinnamon for some time now with the same keyboard. The issue that I have just started having is that my keyboard doesn't let me switch to the TTYs. I press CTRL-ALT-F1 or F2 or F3 or F4.. ect, nothing happens. The rest of the keys work fine, just not the Function keys, at least so far as I have seen they all work fine. This keyboard used to work with no issue. I tried my old PS2 keyboard and it works with no problems. I grabbed a brand new Microsoft Wireless Comfort Desktop 5000 package from work and it does exactly the same thing as my 4000. So it doesn't seem to be bad hardware. I used the "showkey" command and when I press F1 both the wireless keyboards return key code 138, but my PS2 keyboard gives 59. CTRL and ALT give the same keycodes on all the keyboards, 29 for left CTRL and 56 for left ALT. Not sure exactly how key codes work but I would immagine that they are the same from keyboard to keyboard at the level that "showkey" can see, this may be a bad assumption. I booted with a fresh Mint13 live CD and it does the same thing, works fine with the PS2 keyboard but not on wireless.
Now the all important back story... when it stopped working
I recently (2-3 months ago) did a BIOS update on my motherboard and in so doing apparently hosed compatability on my PCI-E bus for some things, causing hard lockups. I guess the new version of the software doesn't like old I7 Sandy bridge CPU's and only works right for Ivy bridge ones. The Mobo manufacturer is sending me a new BIOS chip with the old version of the BIOS on it as the software will not allow downgrading. This is all a known issue. It took me a while to realize that the motherboard update was the issue as it only came to a head when I installed a new video card a week or so ago. The video card has been removed for now, I'm back to using the onboard chip that I have always used. However, in troubleshooting why I was getting lockups and removing hardware from my computer, and switching Nvidia drivers, I also unloaded kernel modules that I thought I didn't absolutely need as well, I was thinking that I may have unloaded something one that was used for wireless keyboards and now I am using a fallback module instead of an ideal for this keyboard, but booting in the live CD would have eliminated that possiblity. When you use rmmod to unload a module it goes back when you reboot right?So my question is what gives? Why would the wireless keyboards return different keycodes than my wired one? Why isn't it working? Does it make sense that it is related to the BIOS update? It'd seem to me that if it were the BIOS then it just wouldn't work at all.
EDIT:I just went into my BIOS settings and tried to save and exit with F10, it did not work on the USB keyboard, but worked fine on the PS2. Seems like it has nothing to do with the OS at all. How could this be a motherboard issue though? I'm a little fuzzy on that.
