Dell latitude D620 and mint

Hi all, My dad just installed linux mint along side windows xp on his laptop. it runs fine, but its got a standby problem.
He reported to me, that his laptop glitched up, coming out of standby. he said when he opened up the laptop again, there where white lines on the screen, and that he had to reboot it.

is there a fix to this?
