No Sound at all in Mint 14

Postby bquiggle on Thu Dec 06, 2012 10:26 pm

I have been working on this frustrating problem for a few days and have yet to find a solution to the problem. In fact, I may have made it worse in my troubleshooting efforts.

I have recently installed Linux Mint 14 and the sound is not working at all. I am trying to use onboard audio. I attempted to remove and reinstall alsa-utils and linux-sound-base to fix the problem and I can now no longer even access alsamixer. When I try to open it in terminal I get:
Code: Select all
ALSA lib pulse.c:243: (pulse_connect) Pulseaudio: unable to connect: Connection refused

cannot open mixer: Connection refused

Even before when I could access alsamixer there was no sound but I feel like I've taken a step backwards and need to fix this issue first.

I apologize if I haven't given enough pertinent information, I'm a bit new at this.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

...
I have often noticed this issue in freshly installed Debian based distros.
The following procedure often works.

Left click on your sound applet.
Left click on "sound settings" and the Mixer window opens.
At bottom Left click on "Select Controls" and
select controls you wish to be using.
***often none are selected and that is the problem***
Close.
Adjust volumne levels.
Quit.
Test.
Hope this works for you.
If it works, please mark your question as [SOLVED].

I have several choices for audio device and I'm not entirely sure which to use, but none of them work to produce sound. The choices I have are HD-Audio Generic (Alsa mixer), Realtek ALC887-VD (OSS Mixer), and Playback: Built-in Audio Analog Stereo (PulseAudio Mixer).

HD-Audio Generic (Alsa Mixer) is what I think I should be using but I have no mixers available to add or adjust. The only thing I can change is a switch of IEC958, whatever that is. I've tried adjusting the mixer levels to maximum in all the other sound devices I can use and those don't work either.

Well, I just ended up installing Mint 13 and the sound worked on first boot with no setting changes. I guess I'll stick with LTS from now on.
