Found this to be a problem. Found several workarounds but none of them helped on my Acer Extensa 5220. It seems to be present when I type $ lspci I get the following report:

The bold line appears to be the thing I have to fix, but I can't seem to be able or skillful enough to make it work. I have several xD cards for my Fuji S5600 (32M, 128M & 1G) all different make, none of them recognized by the system when inserted. Tried as one suggested to leave it inside, restart, eject, insert, hit reload in the file browser, nada, nix, nothing. I'd be glad to replace my Fuji and xD for a different type (rather than replace Linux) but the situation is same with SD cards as well...
