Targus RF Presenter - trackball not working

I have a Targus RF device that serves as trackball, presenter and multimedia controller. It has some other keys, such as email, alt+tab and internet browser. All functions (three mouse buttons, volume up and down, alt+tab, etc) work properly just by plugging in the device - except the trackball (which I find curious, since it is the one thing I would expect to work out of the box).

I need some help troubleshooting this one. The LED on the receiver and the controller blinks when I move the trackball around, so I know a connection is being made. Also, the trackball works under Win7, so I know it is not broken.

I don't know how to go on from here, so any help would be appreciated.
