video driver issue

Postby vicemore on Sun Dec 30, 2012 12:01 am

Hello,

First of all, i am a newbie into linux related stuff. My first connection with linux was only 1 month ago when i installed ubuntu 12.04.

Today i installed linux mint 14 nadia with kde desktop.

when i click additional drivers it is saying : No proprietary drivers are in use on this system.

in steam when i check for video driver updates it is saying : steam in unable to perform video driver detection on your system.

i did try this guide but it dosen't work, it is saying that it can't detect the video card.
http://www.upubuntu.com/2012/10/install ... er-on.html

i have to add that in playbeck devices i can see 2 sound cards.
the 1 from my motherboard and rv770 hdmi audio[Radereon HD 4850/4870]Digital Stereo HDMI.

my system specs are
cpu x2 240
mb asrock880-gmle
saphire hd4870 512mb
OS linkux mint 14 kde 32bit

this is the first time when i ask for help, until now i did manage just fine.
i will be really grateful for any suggestions.

LE: i am really sorry about my english

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

In the release notes for the Main edition it says:

Additional drivers
To install additional drivers, please run the "Software Sources" tool from "Menu->Preferences->Software Sources" and click on the "Additional Drivers" tab. The tool used in previous versions of Linux Mint (Jockey) was discontinued upstream in Ubuntu.

You do need to install the FGLRX drivers if you haven't already done so. Check AMD's website for the latest drivers. http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/legacy/Pages/legacy-radeon_linux.aspx
Make sure to look around for the proper installation instructions. There are some good ones on the Ubuntu wiki. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI#Installing_upstream_drivers_directly_from_AMD.27s_website

Also, beware that you can break your system with a manual FGLRX install. Backup everything before you start and follow the instructions to a t.
