9 in 1 internal card reader not being installed

Postby joez on Mon Dec 31, 2012 4:34 am

After freshly installing Linux Mint Nadia 14 Mate on my HP g3685l desktop, I find the 9 in 1 internal Card reader no longer works. I can find no indication of it being recognized at all, and have found no source of information which leads to resolving the problem. Anyone else experiencing the same problem or found a solution? Neither lspci nor lsusb shows anything I can recognize as being the Card reader.

Does the cardreader work if you put a card in it before powering on your computer? If yes, can you try lspci and lsusb again to see if any new device has appeared?

I've tried that with several different cards even, but no change.

Note: I made a correction to my OP, I'm installed Mint Nadia 14 Mate Desktop 32 bit, not Mint Maya 13, if that helps in solving this problem.

Did it work in the past on Linux, and do you have Windows to try the cardreader there?

Linux Mint 14 works with them. As have a internal 9 in 1 reader I installed myself and plugged into a usb port on my MB.
And 13 14 mate and cinnamon worked.

But from what I remember on the Windows side there is wide ranging ways they are implemented. As reading user comments at NewEgg selection of internal card readers when I was ordering one.

Some do not actually take up a windows drive letter until you plug in a card. Others like mine take 5 drive assignments right off the bat whether anything is plugged into them or not in Windows XP & Windows 7.

And prepackaged systems even worse as you don't know how it was implemented in their system. But definitely a hardware implementation problem. I would also look in the bios and during boot to see if they are being seen by the bios.

Orbmiser, your comment is not really helpful. I think it's clear that the cardreader of joez is not working in Mint (there are no significant changes for cardreader drivers as far as I know, between 13 and 14). And after all, if your cardreader is integrated, it is possible to see the chip type in lspci or lsusb if it gets detected. And it isn't detected at joez.

This rather seems like a hardware failure, because no cardreader is detected at all.

Sorry was trying to be helpful as if it is a hardware failure then wouldn't be missing on bios post when it polling for devices?
Guess I should keep quiet then.

Yes, and no, haven't had a Windows OS for years.

Internal and ALL external card readers work with Vista, XP and Ubuntu 10.04 but NOT all work with Mint 14 Cinamon 32. However SOME external USB card readers do work on Mint 14, but my internal and cheap external ones (99p) do not.
Each OS is on a different hard drive so I can swop drives and OS easily.
Driver problem? Hope this helps.

I installed Linix Mint 14 64 bit recently and have the same problem, but with a realtek multi card reader, 4 slots. I have installed rts 5139,and the modinfo is as follows:-
modinfo rts5139
filename: /lib/modules/3.8.0-030800-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/rts5139/rts5139.ko
version: v1.04
license: GPL
description: Realtek RTS5139/29 USB card reader driver
srcversion: A92776125EB3BB993481E80
alias: usb:v0BDAp0129d*dc*dsc*dp*ic*isc*ip*in*
alias: usb:v0BDAp0139d*dc*dsc*dp*ic*isc*ip*in*
depends:
staging: Y
intree: Y
vermagic: 3.8.0-030800-generic SMP mod_unload modversions
parm: auto_delink_en:enable auto delink (int)
parm: ss_en:enable selective suspend (int)
parm: ss_delay:seconds to delay before entering selective suspend (int)
parm: needs_remote_wakeup:ss state needs remote wakeup supported (int)
Oddly modprobe rts5139 produces nothing.
lsusb produces:-
Bus 002 Device 007: ID 0bda:0151 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Mass Storage Device (Multicard Reader)
lsci produces nothing relating to the card reader.
As a mint newbie I am now stuck!

@ john42: You have a different cardreader, one which is not driven by rts5139. That driver only drives "ID 0bda:0139" and "ID 0bda:0129". You have 0bda:0151. Please open a new topic if you have any problems with this cardreader.
