iPod shuffle not working

Postby Ifflejink on Sun May 04, 2008 2:35 pm

So, I just bought my friend's old iPod shuffle, 1 GB, second generation. I followed the instructions here: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=12060&p=74332&hilit=ipod#p74332

However, I have a problem. The iPod itself is named "DANTE'S IPO" and it's in the /dev/sdb directory, but when I enter /usr/bin/ipod-read-sysinfo-extended /dev/sdb "/media/DANTE'S IPO" in the terminal, I get the following message: "Couldn't resolve Device directory path on /media/DANTE'S IPO". Can someone give me a hand here?

Elementary, my dear Watson :)
You have
DANTE'S IPO

and to my knowledge ' is a reserved/forbidden character in bash (the language for the terminal)

So, then, is there any way that I can change the name of the device?

If you still have Windows do an iPod restore and rename it.

Ok, so I did that (on a Mac, actually, since that's my parents' computer). However, after I updated the iPod software and did a system restore, Mint doesn't even register that the iPod exists. It doesn't mount it or anything.

The mac would have formated it to the HFS+ filesystem. I'm unsure if linux can recognize this, it couldn't when I started. Probably want to find a windows computer (I never thought I would say that....)

Give this a shot. I haven't tried it before.

Ok, so, I did another system restore, this time on a Windows computer, and the iPod is now named "IPOD." However, I get the same error that I got initially.

Workin with Shuffle, no probs, recognized corret (already) on installation.
If the _'_Character wasn't the problem, perhaps the firmware from your IPod is outdated? I guess I use the 1.04 updated with ITunes in April. Usin Mint 4.0. Filesystem is FAT formatted with Windows iTunes.

Note: http://sourceforge.net/projects/shuffle-db/ ... for building a database with python (no itunes needed)

well i know for a fact, that if you're using windows, you can open control panel, go to folder options, then chose show hiden folders, go to your ipod directory, and then copy the ipod control from there. It's the only way i know of. :D i don't know about in mint though, i don't think that rythmbox works with ipod touches, i've never used one. =/
All of which, you think is coming, may really just be, falling down.
