Linuxmint 14 and Laptop ATI drivers

Post by raymerjacque »

I have installed Linuxmint onto 14 mate x64 onto my laptop. I have run linuxmint since version 12 on my desktop, so i am not a new user but also not quite an advanced user yet. In the past i had a shortcut in control center "Additional drivers" that allowed me to update my ATI driver, However this shortcut button is not showing now.

Laptop model : Acer Travelmate 7740G
CPU : Intel Core I5 480M
GFX : ATI 5650
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Ace ... 163.0.html

Under Display Hardware info it shows the following :
-Display-
Resolution : 1600x900 pixels
Vendor : The X.Org Foundation
Version : 1.13.0
-Monitors-
Monitor 0 : 1600x900 pixels
-Extensions-
BIG-REQUESTS
Composite
DAMAGE
DOUBLE-BUFFER
DPMS
DRI2
GLX
Generic Event Extension
MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
MIT-SHM
RANDR
RECORD
RENDER
SECURITY
SGI-GLX
SHAPE
SYNC
X-Resource
XC-MISC
XFIXES
XFree86-DGA
XFree86-VidModeExtension
XINERAMA
XInputExtension
XKEYBOARD
XTEST
XVideo
XVideo-MotionCompensation
-OpenGL-
Vendor : X.Org
Renderer : Gallium 0.4 on AMD REDWOOD
Version : 2.1 Mesa 9.0
Direct Rendering : Yes
Can someone guide me how to install the ATI 5650 ? I think the gfx may be a hybrid Intel/ATI and for some reason linux is just picking up the intel hardware and not ATI ?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Additional drivers
To install additional drivers, please run the "Software Sources" tool from "Menu->Preferences->Software Sources" and click on the "Additional Drivers" tab. The tool used in previous versions of Linux Mint (Jockey) was discontinued upstream in Ubuntu.

Damn, wish i had seen your post earlier before i started messing around on my own :(

I installed the drivers from AMD site on my own and it seemed to work and asked me to reboot my PC, however now it says it cannot boot into graphical xorg interface and then boots to a black screen with a login. Any idea what i should do now to fix this ?

[EDIT]

I used the command : sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx* to remove the driver and get back into linux gui.
