Left sound channel only after reboot

Post by jeffemmert »

I have a Gateway 600ygr laptop with a P4@1.4, 1mb ram, scsi1 running XP Pro, scsi2 running Darnya Linux Mint. It has an ESS Allegro 1988 sound card (aka Maestro). When I run Darnya from the live CD, the sound comes from both speakers, but if I ever need to reboot, the right speaker will never work again. This also happens in Mandriva Spring, Ubuntu 7.10, Kubuntu 8.04 and Fedora. If I reboot in XP Pro, both speakers work every time. Sadly, I don't know how to write my own drivers and "compile" is a new word for me. I've been installing a different OS twice a week, hoping to find a version that worked reliably. Ideas?

You forgot to tell us if it is the main or the KDE edition
Please post the result of lspci (in a gnome terminal you right click to copy)
Paste it in a Code box to make it less bulky
I don't recognize the sound card so I want to see more details
