I am having problems with sound on my system. I am using LMDE 32 bit. I have a ASUS mother board with on board sound. I goggled it with no workable solution. anyone have any other ideas?

I have tried to help someone else on this before Christmas. I am running LMDE 64 and know I initially had problems but cannot remember how I cured it.
This is the thread viewtopic.php?f=48&t=119867 perhaps it will help. The volume control device on my system is HDA ATI SB (Alsa Mixer)
