Battery status on login screen

I'm not really sure if this is the right place for this question but I couldn't find a better place. The newbie section was no help. I'm running Linux Mint 14 MATE on an Asus x401a. I have recently learned how to manipulate the login screen theme files. What I want to do now is add a battery monitor to the login screen. Any ideas?
