scanner nightmare - 'sane' version - Ubuntu upstream?

Postby fotonix on Tue Jan 22, 2013 3:54 am

I am having problems using my Canon 9000F scanner with Mint 13 64bit Cinnamon.

The device lists fine in the output of 'lsusb' (list USB), but simple scan and xsane then both complain about no device found. I checked the version of sane and it is 1.0.14-9 which is (i) circa 2009, and (ii) marked as 'unstable'.

Sane 1.0.21 apparently brought in 'complete' support for the 9000F and a slew of other Canon scanners, back in 2010. It is 2013 already and I am wondering why it is not is the available repositories - Ubuntu are sleeping?

How does one wake Ubuntu up to update sane to a version newer than 4 years old? Building from source did not work for me as the packages (simple scan and xsane) were still pointing to the ancient version - obvious deficiency in my skills :(
